Premarital counseling is a type of therapy aimed at helping couples prepare for marriage. It involves a series of sessions where couples explore their expectations, values, and goals for their future together. By discussing multiple aspects of the relationship, such as communication, conflict resolution, financial planning, and family dynamics, premarital counseling helps you build a strong foundation for a healthy and lasting marriage.

Prepare/Enrich is a scientifically proven premarital therapy that can help couples become aware of important issues before they turn into major problems. Research shows that completing premarital counseling through the Prepare/Enrich assessment program can reduce your risk for divorce by 30%.

Through Prepare/Enrich, couples can expect to:

  • increase awareness of both strength and potential growth areas,
  • stimulate discussion concerning issues vital to their relationship, and
  • learn valuable communication and conflict resolution skills.

What to Expect with Prepare/Enrich

Prepare/Enrich follows a structured format. After a joint intake, your therapist will schedule individual sessions with you and your partner before resuming joint sessions. Each session will then focus on one of 8 topics. Homework is given between sessions in order to enhance the skills learned in sessions and prepare for the next session. The final session reviews your experience and identifies ways to continue improving your relationship outside of therapy.

A customized assessment is used with Prepare/Enrich to help couples view their relationship through an unbiased lens. This assessment allows the couple to dive into important topics that can cause stress or be difficult for couples to navigate. Below are just a few topics you can expect to be discussed with your premarital counselor.

Stressors are external events such as jobs, financial concerns, and lack of sleep or exercise that can cause a physical or emotional reaction. These reactions can then have a positive or negative impact on the relationship.

Communication in a relationship is how each individual expresses their feelings and opinions to one another. Everyone has their own beliefs, feelings, and attitudes about communication, which impacts their relationships.

Conflict Resolution

Conflict resolution is how issues are recognized and resolved in a relationship. Couples can explore the strategies used to talk through or end arguments along with how satisfied each partner is with the resolution process.

Romance + Sexuality

Romance and sexuality include satisfaction in affection, level of comfort in discussing sexual issues, and attitudes toward sexual behavior and family planning. Couples need to be aware of each partner’s individual feelings, attitudes, concerns, and expectations around sex and affection.

Spiritual Beliefs

Spiritual beliefs include the meaning of life, the importance of religion and religious involvement, and the expectations of religion on their family. The attitudes, feelings, and concerns about the meaning of religious beliefs and practices within the context of a relationship are assessed.

Financial Management

Financial management involves each individual’s relationship with money, awareness of their financial health, and how they make financial decisions. Finances are a common stressor for all couples.

Relationship Roles + Expectations

Relationship roles and expectations include the beliefs, attitudes, and feelings about relationship roles. Couples will discuss how egalitarian roles are positively related to a successful marital culture.
